‘American Gothic Country Retreat’ was envisioned by MossCreek as a countryside retreat for New York-based owners, nestled in Red Hook, New York, about 100 miles north of New York City, in the Hudson Valley. The property features a collection of buildings designed to meet the owner’s wish to use historical and antique structures. It serves as both a country getaway and a unique home for their art treasures.
The scope of the project entails an early Pennsylvania log house and an Ohio post-and-beam bank barn, combined to create this three-bedroom, three-bath, 4,621-square-foot house. The log house style is circa 1790’s. The barn style is circa 1830’s. The original framing of these barns features massive oak beams and a queen post roof system.

A loft above the kitchen area creates a family room. One large beam spans the entire building to support the loft. A vaulted ceiling with an open-hearth fireplace at the far end of the great room gives this home an open, spacious feel. Windowed cupolas patterned after original barn elements provide extra light and ventilation.

What We Love About This Home
This remarkable Dutchess County retreat offers so many stunning details. We are loving how the architect combined a circa 1790s Pennsylvania log house and a circa 1830s Ohio bank barn to create a home with so much character and charm. The dining room’s breathtaking handblown glass chandelier is an inspired choice that somehow feels exactly right against the heavy timbers and dark wood. The great room horse sculpture is also a unique piece and a very fitting addition to this countryside home.

The Dining Room

A cascading chandelier composed of individually hung glass flower-form pendants hangs above a round wood dining table surrounded by rush-seat ladder-back chairs. French doors and multi-pane windows frame garden views on either side, flooding the space with natural light.

Living Room

Kitchen

The kitchen features a vintage Magic Chef range in cream and chrome with a domed hood, copper pans hung on a wall rack, and log cabin walls with exposed rough-hewn ceiling beams throughout.
Lofty Bedroom

The owner’s bedroom occupies the original log house, with hand-hewn log walls, reclaimed wood floors, an iron chandelier, twig armchairs, and a carved dark wood cabinet. We are loving the stained glass sidelights on the French doors.
Bathroom

In the bathroom, a dual-sided fireplace connects the spaces, while an antique-inspired bathtub offers a restful spot to soak.

The Outbuildings

The property includes a wooden silo, split-rail fencing, stone walls, and a full-length covered porch with Adirondack chairs, completing this beautiful retreat in the Dutchess County countryside.
