This sunny French country cottage, designed by R. A. Hoffman Architects, is nestled in Villanova, a picturesque suburb on the Main Line, a historic stretch of towns outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The vision for this new home was to replicate the timeless, rusticated European country style that appears as if it were built years ago — with stucco, board and batten siding, exposed brick, and salvaged timbers.
European sourced antiques – such as the exterior doors, outfitted with restored oversized door hardware, dovecote weathervane, copper cupola, French reclaimed stone fountain, and mantel are just a few pieces that contribute to the timeless architecture. Rough-hewn timber beams add a touch of Old World charm to the open-concept kitchen and living areas.

The owners downsized to a one-floor living space designed to fit their entertaining needs.

A flexible dining room was designed to make it easy to move furniture around to accommodate the occasion. Custom dining tables double as library tables, and the room transforms to a casual offset from the great room, creating a more intimate area to gather.

The open kitchen was designed with an adjacent service kitchen, enabling the owner to entertain large groups while keeping the mess out of sight.

Hanging the original barn door, salvaged from the historic barn, divides the great room and kitchen area as a reverent token of the estate.

Reclaimed timbers, sandblasted and re-stained, anchor the vaulted ceiling with a state-of-the-art A/V, Lutron lighting, and security system.

The homeowners were looking to downsize and simplify their lives, and this main-level owner’s bedroom suite guarantees accessibility and comfort for years to come.

The vision for this project was to create a single bathroom suite consisting of his-and-her private rooms, connected by a large steam shower. Both baths are outfitted with radiant floor heat, a custom lighting control system that allows the homeowners to set different moods and task lighting, motion-lights placed under each vanity for evening illumination, and a custom sound system. European lighting and plumbing fixtures, in conjunction with the finish palette, create a spa-like retreat.

Designed with entertaining guests in mind, the covered terrace is complete with a fireplace and an outdoor kitchen.
