Frances Zook Architect, in collaboration with Beth Meyer Design, has transformed a large airplane hangar on a picturesque 300-acre site along the Etowah River in Kingston, Georgia.  The reimagined structure now serves as a serene weekend retreat for the outdoor-loving Marietta-based owners, along with their extended family, who were seeking a place to hunt, fish, and spend quality time together.

The property originally had a pilot’s clubhouse and an airplane hangar, which were used by private pilots flying onto the property’s grass landing strip and who needed a place to spend the night. The initial plan was to convert the clubhouse into a 1,500-square-foot contemporary living space for the new owners, but they soon discovered issues with the floodplain and several building constraints.

From Airplane Hangar to Weekend Retreat

They then turned to the large airplane hangar, which posed the challenge of converting a rectangular metal structure into a stunning home with bedrooms to accommodate extended family and space for entertaining. Drawing inspiration from the region’s Native American heritage, the interiors embrace a warm, earthy palette, layered with natural materials and anchored by a custom artwork from Jared W. Knox Art.

What We Love About This Home

This converted airplane hangar showcases the power of adaptive reuse, demonstrating how even the most unexpected structures can be transformed into breathtaking homes. The earthy, layered palette feels rooted in the Georgia landscape without ever feeling rustic or dated. The oversized covered porch essentially doubles the outdoor living space, and the interiors strike the perfect balance between collected warmth and clean contemporary lines.

The architect stripped the metal off the structure, preserving only the roof and allowing its natural slope to guide the placement of the interior walls. This approach shaped a two-story layout connected by an open staircase, and a program that offers three bedrooms (including a kid’s bunk room), three bathrooms, an upstairs loft, and a mudroom. The main living areas feature an airy great room anchored by an angled, tile-clad fireplace, along with a generous kitchen defined by a continuous marble slab that extends from the range hood and backsplash to the island.

Outdoor Living at Its Finest: The Covered Pavilion

The architect devised a spacious porch outfitted with a weathered outdoor fireplace, ceiling fans, and integrated infrared heaters, effectively extending the family’s living space to 3,000 square feet. Its roofline was designed to evoke the sweep of an airplane wing, adding character to the exterior, which is clad in stained cypress. A new breezeway and oversized carport for larger vehicles complete the design, while lending the home dimension.

I love the simplicity. Blends well with nature. The outdoor sitting area is so lovely, with the angled roof.
