Located in the hills of Los Feliz, Los Angeles, this classic California Colonial Revival home was originally designed by architect Milton Black in 1936 and sits perched near the Griffith Observatory. Commune Design’s interior renovation respects the home’s historic character and formal layout while introducing a more relaxed, contemporary sensibility through color, graphic patterns, collected furnishings, and artisanal craftsmanship.

Thoughtfully layered and personal, the designer’s intent was to showcase the owner’s art collection gathered over the years. The new design preserves the home’s original casement windows and the formality of much of the social rooms and stairs, while new furnishings and finishes refresh the space throughout.

Working with local builder Echo Projects, the team redesigned the kitchen and adjacent areas to create a family-centered hub complete with a lounge and cozy breakfast nook. New cabinetry with subtle curves honors the home’s Art Deco roots while blending seamlessly with the original architecture.

What We Love About This Home

This Colonial Revival home is a masterclass in balancing historic preservation with livable contemporary design. Commune Design’s layered approach brings together eclectic furnishings, bold color choices, and artisanal details that feel deeply personal rather than decorator-driven. From the moody inky blue den to the cheerful children’s wing, every room tells a story. It is one of those rare renovations where the new feels like it has always been there.
