McClellan Architects has designed this spectacular waterfront home for a father and his two children in the Pacific Northwest along Bellingham Bay, Washington. The homeowner wanted a house that would take advantage of its beautiful surroundings while melding with its natural environment. The home was built right into the cliffside, with the exterior facade clad with untreated cedar, concrete, and glass.
This spacious three-story home offers three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Upon entering, you will find yourself in a glass atrium that showcases a dramatic iron staircase that travels all the way up to the third level. The real showpiece of this space is the Bocci pendant lighting, which is suspended at varying heights from the ceiling. Continue below to see more of this incredible house tour…
The home’s material elements take cues from the surrounding environment. The concrete matches the enormous boulders on the property, the cedar nods to the trees, and the glass affords its inhabitants views from all spaces.
What We Love: This is a true dream house with stunning views, beautiful design, and a prime waterfront location, not sure you can get much better than that! Concrete usually feels cold, but with the outdoors pulled into the interior so well, it feels more warm, especially with the use of so much wood incorporated into the design scheme. Overall, we love this home’s hillside location and how it perfectly captures panoramic waterfront views of Bellingham Bay.

A hand carved door comprised of cedar forms the entryway to this striking home (10 feet high, five feet wide).
On the first level, four sliding panel doors completely opens the living and kitchen area up to the backyard and waterfront. This space is perfect for entertaining guests, who can dine and lounge inside and that reconvene outside to lounge in the outdoor living spaces.
The kitchen island countertop is the showpiece of this space, comprised of a 14 foot slab of live-edge fir.
In the living room, a cozy window seat next to the fireplace provides additional seating and a great space to curl up with a book. The fireplace, made of cast-in-place concrete with an eye-catching mantle of flamed cedar, provides added warmth to the space on a cool day.
The master bedroom en-suite takes up the entire upper level, with a feature wall clad with flame-treated cedar, the same material that was used for the fireplace mantel on the first level.
The master bathroom features radiant heat flooring to keep your feet warm on the otherwise cold concrete.
A freestanding tub lets you soak in luxury, while surrounding glass doors open outwards to let in fresh sea breezes.
A balcony off the owner’s bedroom retreat offers a private space to enjoy mesmerizing views over the bay.
