CWB Architects has completely transformed this beach-chic cottage in the charming, historic seaside community of Amagansett, New York. This 520-square-foot fisherman’s shack was originally built and modestly expanded during the 1910s and 20s, and never benefited from a consistent master planner. This resulted in a hodgepodge of small rooms under a low-slung roof, with an irresistibly salty appeal.
The design team gutted this small cottage and reprogrammed the interior layout, creating two identical side-by-side bedrooms. Privacy has been afforded in these two bedrooms via sliding partitions, rather than swinging doors, to save space. A lavish stall shower adds more space to the bathroom, as does the pocket door addition. An outdoor shower accommodates a second bather and provides the perfect spot to rinse off after a dip in the pool.

The opening up of the kitchen/dining area permits fluid circulation into the living area. To give the cottage a more spacious feel, the design team removed the low ceilings and clad the gable with pine shiplap. The structure’s livable space was greatly expanded by creating three outdoor rooms: a sundeck for lounging, a patio for grilling, and a pergola-shaded loggia for dining.
What We Love About This Home
This fabulous beach-style cottage showcases a brand-new, bright, and airy design within the existing footprint. An indoor-outdoor connection was achieved with the incorporation of large windows and a surrounding garden, deck, and swimming pool. Overall, the design feels very spacious despite the compact floor plan, thanks to smaller-scale furnishings and the use of sliding/pocket doors.
