Architect Dan Campbell, together with Cullen Construction, undertook this extensive renovation of a historic stone farmhouse dating back to 1744 in Malvern, a borough in Chester County, Pennsylvania. After devastating fire damage, only one thing remained: the original fireplace wall, built in 1744. From that single surviving element, the project team rebuilt this legacy home from the ground up.

Every stone and every detail was crafted to honor its past while securing its future. The best renovations don’t erase what came before; they honor it. The addition expanded the home’s footprint without disrupting its character. New spaces were introduced with the same care given to the original structure, so that nothing feels added on, only completed. For the family inside, the home simply became more of itself.

What We Love About This Home

We love that the project team saved the one piece of the house that mattered most: the 1744 fireplace wall, and let it anchor everything built around it. There’s an unexpected pairing of rugged fieldstone exteriors with playful, layered interiors, from the sage-green speakeasy bar to the basement arcade tucked beneath a spiral staircase. Most of all, we love that the addition disappears into the original structure so seamlessly that the whole home reads as one continuous story rather than two eras stitched together.

Tell Us: What detail from this farmhouse renovation caught your eye first, the salvaged fireplace wall, the hidden well under glass, or the game room arcade? Let us know in the Comments below. We enjoy reading your feedback!
