Cottages and summer homes are the perfect situation for sleeping nooks, and so are homes that are limited in space. We can adapt to limited space by adjusting our design accordingly. Creating a sleeping nook for children not only offers a fun design concept they’ll love, but also makes a crowded space feel more open.
These space savers also help maximize awkward, slanted walls and help you sneak beds into unexpected places. It is super cozy when a bed is tucked into a nook or cubby, and it makes a child feel safe and protected.
Bunk beds are always a perfect option when fighting with space constraints, but for a more sophisticated look, a sleeping alcove is always a perfect option. Even though they share the same space, these room-savers enjoy a high level of privacy in their individual nooks.
Don’t be afraid to have some fun with your room design by adding a theme to the space. We have included a few examples below to help inspire you to create your own themed space.
There are also inspiring ideas, such as building storage beneath, above, in the stairs, and even in between sleeping nooks. So take a look at our 40 inspiring ideas of some super unique sleeping nooks and don’t forget to let us know which one is your favorite!

Tips to Create a Cozy Sleeping Nook
- Choose the Perfect Spot
Look for unused areas such as an alcove, corner, window seat, or under-stair space. A naturally recessed area instantly creates that tucked-away feeling children love. - Layer Soft, Comfortable Bedding
Comfort is key. Use plush mattresses, soft sheets, cozy quilts, chunky knit throws, and plenty of pillows to create warmth and texture. - Add Built-In Storage
Incorporate drawers beneath the bed or shelves along the walls to keep books, toys, and blankets organized while maximizing space. - Install Warm, Gentle Lighting
Soft lighting makes a big difference. Wall sconces, fairy lights, or LED strip lighting provide a calming glow that’s perfect for winding down at night. - Create a Sense of Enclosure
Curtains, a canopy, or partial framing can make the nook feel private and secure, helping children feel relaxed and protected. - Keep It Low and Safe
Platform beds or floor-level mattresses are ideal for younger children and add to the cozy atmosphere while improving safety. - Use Calming Color Palettes
Soft neutrals, muted pastels, or warm, earthy tones help create a soothing environment that encourages restful sleep. - Personalize the Design
Add artwork, name signs, themed décor, or wall decals to make the nook feel uniquely theirs. Personal touches make the space more meaningful. - Include a Reading Element
Install small book ledges or a narrow shelf for bedtime stories. A reading light nearby encourages quiet, screen-free wind-down time. - Prioritize Safety and Ventilation
Ensure shelves are securely mounted, edges are rounded, and the space has proper airflow. Safety should always come first in enclosed designs.
