Beautiful shingle style cottage on the shores of Little Traverse Bay, Michigan

classic shingle-style cottage exterior

This classic shingle-style cottage was reimagined by the Cottage Company, perched on the shores of Little Travers Bay in Harbor Springs, Michigan. This home takes its design inspiration from an antique Swedish Mora clock. It sits in a wall niche in the foyer, right next to a grand circular staircase. The color is a beautiful powder blue, lending a serene feel and inspiring the home’s color palette.

Throughout this home, you will find that all walls are clad with wood — beadboard, shiplap, and various types of paneling. The neutral color scheme mirrors the seaside setting, creating a serene atmosphere that is idyllic for the homeowner, who is a busy entrepreneur. To enhance the home’s timeless architecture, the original cherry floors underwent a four-stop refinishing process to achieve a walnut appearance. The other floors were painted, including the sunroom and the guest room whose floors are checkered.

The designer selected Benjamin Moore Hayseed in varying shades to maintain a consistent aesthetic throughout the cottage, adjusting the intensity based on the natural light in each room.
