Peter Zimmerman Architects has renovated this Tudor-style home that was built in 1907 and was the owner’s childhood home, located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He and his wife purchased the house from his mother so they could renovate it to realize its full potential and give it the architectural detail it should have had. The interior of the house was void of detail.

The design program was to reorganize existing spaces and design new ones that created open, airy living spaces and efficient circulation: The existing kitchen, back stair, and mudroom, along with a 1 story, flat roof 3 car garage (which had been added at a later time) were removed.

Replacing them are a vaulted ceiling family room, butler’s pantry, kitchen, family dining, a family stair, family entrance, and an enclosed breezeway connection to a new 3-car garage with an apartment above.

The existing second floor was completely gutted allowing the architects to enlarge the top of the stair to create a more gracious landing and enhance circulation.

The architects designed a master suite with a sitting room, an upstairs study with a full bath, and an additional bedroom and bath.

The second-floor addition consists of a guest bedroom and bath, a suite containing a bedroom, bath, dressing room, and sitting room and there is an elevator, laundry room, and family stair.

The third floor which was an attic was finished and turned into a multipurpose work room.

The architects lowered the basement floor by 2 feet and underpinned the entire perimeter to create adequate ceiling height.  This allowed them to add a game room, a club room with a fireplace, an exercise room, and a wine cellar.

They removed the existing swimming pool allowing us to create a garden pavilion surrounded by beautiful gardens and a fountain.  A new pool and pool house/garage were designed and built nearer the family living area.

What We Love: This Tudor style home in Pennsylvania was completely renovated with seamless additions to bring the house back to its “glory days.” Every detail was designed with the owner’s art and antiques in mind. From the millwork to the plastering, to the decorative light fixtures and hardware, all of the architectural details were custom designed and fabricated to create a truly stunning home that will last for years to come.⁠
