Designed by Zak Architecture, this project is a modern interpretation of island-style homes, set on a lava field poised at the edge of the Pacific Ocean on the Big Island, Hawaii. Located on Kakapa Bay, this tropical retreat both reflects and contrasts the surrounding landscape.
Black lava rock is the primary building material and was used in several different ways in the garden. The surrounding landscape, including Kiawe trees and fountain grass, was brought into the site to frame the lush garden.

This sprawling retreat features separate structures for the main living, media, studio, office, entertainment pavilion, bedrooms, and garage. Outdoor amenities include a pool, spas, fireplace, barbeque, courtyard, and ocean view. Constructed of Venetian Plaster, Alaskan Yellow Cedar, coral, and zinc roof shingles. The design emphasizes texture, clean lines, and artistic lights.
What We Love: This tropical retreat offers breezy island living with its seamless indoor-outdoor flow. We are loving the overall concept of this home with its separate structures for public and private living. The outdoor living spaces are fabulous with the sumptuous swimming pool and lounging spaces centered around fire features for warmth and ambiance… and the incredible outdoor dining pavilion with dreamy Pacific Ocean views.
