Perched atop the hills of Silver Lake in Los Angeles, California, this spectacular midcentury modern home was designed in 1967 by architect Thomas Takahashi as his personal family home. This pedigreed post and beam jewel box floats amongst the treetops offering magnificent, panoramic views of Griffith Observatory and the iconic Hollywood sign.
A “jewel box” home is a smaller, sophisticated home with lots of expensive materials and high-end finishes and details. Comprised of wood and walls of glass, this exceptional architectural time capsule consists of 1,434 square feet of living space with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and studio space. The light-filled interiors was renovated by interior designer Colby Brown.
A sanctuary in the sky, live a serene dream in this treehouse-like setting, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature from every room. Period details include cork flooring, redwood decking, original cabinetry, and Formica countertops.
Modern amenities include central A/C, heated tile flooring, and a water filtration system. Hovering over a 1/3 of an acre, containing lush grounds and gardens, Mr. Takahashi’s pottery kiln and studio still stand with a collection of his original work.
What We Love: This midcentury modern home nestled in the hills of Silver Lake features expansive walls of glass to capture views of the spectacular surroundings. The interiors have an airy aesthetic thanks to walls of glazing along with clerestory windows. A seamless indoor-outdoor connection expands the living space for this compact home, which is perfect for entertaining. We are loving the preserved details of the original home and the feeling of serenity with this home being elevated above the treetops.
