This modern Arizona desert home has amazing indoor and outdoor living

modern-home-exterior

The Ranch Mine is responsible for reimagining the classic American Ranch home for modern living in a new build called ‘Hive’, located in Paradise Valley, Arizona. This home offers an abundance of natural light, open space, and a wonderful connection with the outdoors.

Ranch houses, or ramblers, are typically about sunshine and informal indoor/outdoor living. Visually they were often characterized by their low, linear profile, asymmetrical courtyard plans, separated living and sleeping areas, vaulted main living areas, mixed exterior materials, and large glass doors to outdoor patios.

The homeowners purchased the unconventionally shaped flag lot because of its large size and privacy despite its proximity to urban amenities. The architects used this unique shape and privacy to create a 5,083 square foot dwelling that extends out into the landscape, stretching out to guide friends and family into the embrace of the courtyard-style plan.

While traditional ranch homes had low pitched roofs, ‘Hive’ features a gabled volume to signify the entrance and main living area, flanked by flat roofs to maintain the low, linear profile and meet the strict zoning height restriction of the area.

The vertical wood slats break the rhythm as they meet the sliding glass doors, to lighten the transition from solid to transparent. The solid wall provides a canvas for the ever-changing shadows of the nearby trees. Stainless downspout hinged covers cleanly discharge rain collected on the roof to the landscape.

Very nice! Also living in the desert I’m amazed at all the exterior wood. While I love the look I also know what the intense heat and sun does to it. Wondering what their plans are to maintain it?

Love it. Not a fan of Board formed concrete walls on the fireplace. Been in the fireplace business 33 years and I’m kind of over this style
