Architecture studio Land to Living has transformed an aging property into a midcentury modern mountain retreat in Alpine Meadows, in North Lake Tahoe, California. The home is called “Hazel’s Hideaway”, which was once the summer hideaway of the 1940’s Hollywood actress, Hazel Court Taylor.
Modernizing the function, enhancing the experience of nature, and paying homage to Hazel’s glamorous yet rugged spirit were paramount to the vision for this mountain dwelling. The architects added just under 2,000 square feet to the original structure, which now boasts three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, and a two-car garage.

The addition of a garage, kitchen and outdoor living space created possibilities for expanded private areas and open living areas. The visual impact of the addition was mitigated by enveloping the garage and kitchen with a living roof of high alpine succulents to blend with the landscape.
The exterior features a one-of-a-kind copper roof as well as a green roof on another section, and copper paneled chimneys.
What We Love: This midcentury mountain retreat has been completely remodeled with an addition to create a comfortable home for rest and relaxation. Surrounded by the most spectacular mountain setting, this beautiful light-filled home offers an abundance of warmth thanks to the heavy use of wood. A wall of windows provides a connection to the surrounding beauty, which can be enjoyed from this home’s great room.

Note: Have a look at a couple of other fascinating home tours that we have showcased here on One Kindesign in the Lake Tahoe region: Dreamy mountain retreat with serene indoor-outdoor connection in Tahoe and Rustic mountain home in Lake Tahoe surrounded by an enchanted forest.
A wall of windows that extends from the ground to the main level eventually angles over the great room to become a skylight, allowing for a view of the surrounding mountains. Wall paneling throughout is a wire-brushed engineered Sapele while ceilings and posts are cedar.
This L-shaped kitchen features an exquisite onyx countertop and European-style cabinetry. The space opens to the dining area, which is centered in the great room with a Sapele block patterned bar.
Interior doors and cabinet fronts have a hand-scraped finish. Double doors on each side of the bar lead to the large outdoor patio.
A floating staircase leads to the lower-level family room and three-bedroom suites. Bath fixtures, door, and cabinet hardware are Sun Valley Bronze.
Embodying Hazel’s spirit, a carefully curated collection of the actress’s movie memorabilia, decor, and her own sculptures and tools were set against a subtly glamorous palette of finishes and bespoke furnishings.
