Harding Huebner Architects in collaboration with Allard + Roberts Interior Design has created this organic modern retirement home located on Town Mountain in Asheville, North Carolina. Conveniently sited near Asheville, this custom home was created to make the most of the expansive mountain views. The design employed locally sourced materials for the hard surfaces.
The project team worked together with local craftsmen to create handcrafted details throughout the home. This included the front door, stair railings, exterior railings, powder bath vanities, and the kitchen range hood. The designers sourced upholstery made in North Carolina and designed locally crafted custom furnishings for the interiors.

In addition to sourcing the architectural fixtures and finishes, and selecting the area rugs, lighting, furniture, and decor, the designers also worked with the homeowners on curating a collection of artwork and objects sourced through local art galleries. The finished result is an organic modern home that maximizes its location and views while integrating custom-crafted details, furnishings, artwork, and decor. The owners now enjoy their dwelling with their two dogs, and love to entertain with visiting friends and family.
What We Love: This organic modern mountain home was crafted into a mountainside to taking advantage of the spectacular views. Inspired by this home’s surrounding the simple, regionally sourced material palette seems to meld into the landscape. We are especially loving the atmosphere of the living room, with its expansive windows that soak in the views and beautiful fireplace for warmth and ambiance.

In the living room, a custom-fabricated fireplace boasts a steel wrap and TV mount with a floating hearth and mantle of custom poured concrete and a bluestone chimney. Beautiful white shiplap paneling surrounds the stone, concrete, and steel, while natural fir beams infuse warmth into the space. Hubbardton forge pendant lights add a warm glow over the custom furnishings.
The great room plan boasts expansive walls of glazing to soak in the breathtaking mountain views from the living, dining, and kitchen spaces. The custom cabinetry is a mix of white paint and stained oak, while natural fir beams add warmth to the ceiling.
This custom kitchen design features flat panel cabinetry in dark stained oak mixed with painted white cabinetry โ Origami White SW 7636 – Sherwin Williams. The countertops are honed quartz meant to resemble concrete, while the backsplash is a slab of natural quartzite with a polished finish.
A locally crafted custom dining table is made from oak and stained a bit lighter than the cabinetry, yet darker than the plain sawn oak floors.
A spa-like bathroom features mesmerizing mountain views from the freestanding tub. Motorized shades are mounted at the top of the windows to ensure privacy. The floating vanity is stained in dark oak while matching floating shelves offer storage and display next to a custom built-in linen cabinet. The LED lighting at the vanity is bright yet dimmable. The Brizo faucets and cabinet hardware are in chrome. Gray leathered limestone floors add to the modern feel of this space.
This shower features a contrasting detail of black granite tiles set in a neutral gray porcelain surround. The matte black plumbing fixtures add to the high contrast shower, inspired by a man’s game room/bar space.
