E. Cobb Architects in collaboration with RD Interiors has reimagined the former gym and auditorium of an iconic school into a spectacular industrial modern condo. The West Queen Anne School is one of Seattle, Washington’s most iconic abodes. Formerly a public elementary school from 1896 to 1981, the adaptive reuse structure is now high-end condominiums.
The original architects, Warren P. Skillings and James M. Corner designed the school in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, which is still visible in the exterior’s ornate brickwork and steeply-pitched roof. This was the first Seattle school to receive National Register of Historic Places status in 1975, while two years later it became a Seattle landmark. In 1983-84, the architectural firm of Cardwell/Thomas and Associates renovated and converted the school, into 49 condominium units.
A masterpiece in modern aesthetics, this condo conversion encompasses 2,980 square feet of living space with two bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. Interior spaces are characterized by modern angles, soaring concrete ceilings, and floating steel stairs.
What We Love: This spectacular modern condo boasts soaring concrete ceilings and open living spaces. The living room acts as a central atrium with double volume, floor-to-ceiling windows that connect to an expansive patio. This adaptive reuse project is a stunning example of how preserving a historical structure can bring character and a unique design aesthetic to a living space.
