This Tudor revival home was completely renovated by DeForest Architects, located in the Queen Anne neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. The owner of this 3,500 square foot dwelling is a trained artist who had a vision of creating a place where her family could experience and create art, to both appreciate and reinterpret history.
In this turn-of-the-century house, the proportions, woodwork, and stained glass provided an idyllic canvas to draw inspiration for the remodel. “Moving up through the floors, a modern interpretation of traditional details and intricate carvings gradually gives way to a minimalist attic perch with a view of Elliott Bay,” states the architect.

Modern Mudroom Entry: A nearly invisible glass-and-steel entry is the only addition to this structure. Its lightness is a clear contrast to the weighty brick exterior, completely modern yet respecting the existing traditional forms. A simple rack provides an alternative to the traditional coat closet. Ottomans provide places to sit down to put on or take off your shoes. Indoor plants blur the lines between indoors and out.
What We Love: This Tudor revival home was beautifully renovated to offer a light and airy feel, where original features were preserved and highlighted in innovative ways. Contemporary pieces were incorporated in a way that makes the house stylish yet functional. Overall, a luminous and unexpected home that is grounded, but not bound by its history, and intended to delight and adapt to the lifestyle of this young family.

Above: The walls throughout the interiors are painted in White Dove OC-17 | Benjamin Moore. For the floors, the architects preserved the original oak, refinished to a lighter and more natural shade.
The kitchen had been previously remodeled, so it required very little enhancements. The flooring previously had marble, which was switched out with an oak wood to match the flooring throughout the other spaces — yet laid out in a chevron pattern.
Just off the living room is a sun porch, which was given a facelift with a fresh coat of paint, a built-in bench and new furnishings.
In the master bathroom, the Womb” chair and ottoman is by Eero Saarinen.
In the kid’s bedroom, the chair is a swivel “Everyday Velvet Gray Groovy Swivel Chair” from Pottery Barn Teen. The entire room is about 13 x 14′. The bed alcove is about 6 x 12 including the platform and cabinets at both ends that are not fully visible. The horizontal doors are on pneumatic piston lift hinges that assist in lifting the doors and then stay open. The wood is Baltic birch plywood, lending a light Scandinavian modern feel.
In a shard hallway bathroom, each of the daughter’s has their own Japanese soaking tub/shower combo.
Attic Hideaway: Concealed behind what appears to be a closet door is a plywood clad staircase that leads to an attic. Scandinavian-inspired plywood cladding emphasizes the complex roofline while creating a quiet sky-lit perch with a bird’s-eye view. An arched semi-transparent wall of polycarbonate panels produces playful alcoves around the periphery.
Note: The modular seating was custom designed by the designer, NB Design Group and manufactured by their upholsterer in Seattle, WA.
The attic also includes a guest bedroom to host overnight guests.
The project also entailed a finished basement, offering a guest bedroom, kitchenette, laundry room, workroom and art studio. An artistic plant rack was devised from copper plumbing pipes!
