Booth Hansen architects in collaboration with Scott Christopher Homes is responsible for the design of this beach style retreat located in New Buffalo, Michigan. This 6,580 square foot home is nestled on the edge of Lake Michigan, surrounded by dense woods and a bluff to the sandy shore. The project team was tasked with creating an energy-efficient, low-maintenance getaway home that could comfortably accommodate multiple generations.

It was important to make the most of the panoramic lake views and wooded landscape while providing a strong indoor-outdoor connection. The property features four cedar-clad cabins designed to reflect the surrounding Midwest vernacular architecture. A lush courtyard invites visitors up to the retreat, while water beckons through the porch connector. Each of the structures is linked by flat, zinc-clad connector spaces that give both separation and definition.

Each cabin provides a dedicated function: storage, guest, gathering, and master suite. The dramatic vaulted living space provides a stark contrast to the more intimate porch and family room in the connectors. A master suite and guest suites accommodate the needs of the family.

Expansive windows and sliding glass doors enable spaces to maximize views to the lake and the woods while allowing the home to โ€œbreathe the lake air.โ€  Dramatic skylights allow natural light to flood the interiors with natural light. The use of durable materials in the design reduces maintenance while evoking the natural beach landscape.

A central entrance into the dwelling invites you into an open dining and lounge space. Natural light floods in through rooftop skylights. Soaring ceilings and a muted color palette give the adjacent kitchen and living room a bright and airy feel, while the large, sliding glass doors and picture windows invite the warmth of the outdoors in.

The family room encompasses one of the zinc-clad connector zones, which provides its inhabitants an intimate lounging space. This space leads into the master suite wing, boasting vaulted ceilings, and sleek lines. There are three additional guest suites in the opposite wing of the home, providing ideally separate living spaces for a multi-generational family.
