Surf House was designed as a beach retreat for a young family by T.W. Ryan Architecture, located in the small beach enclave of Ditch Plains, Montauk, New York. The area is a hot spot for surfers and bohemians. The homeowners reside in West Village, New York, looking for a relaxing escape from urban living. They were attracted to this beautiful area in part because of the similarity it has to their native Ireland.
The design of this two-story beach dwelling is shaped by the raw beauty of its surroundings, looking to capture the warm otherworldly spirit that fills the salt air. This house embraces the natural materials, finishes and landscape traditional to this locale. The interiors were designed to be comfortable and inviting, with a neutral color palette and stylish Scandinavian furnishings and accessories.
“In the spirit of the early Hampton’s work of architects such as Richard Meier and Charles Gwathmey, the traditional materials are made contemporary through a reductive color palate and the use of pure, primitive forms,” explains the architects. “Forms which have presence but whose asymmetry produces an unidentifiable dissonance.”
