This two-story modern courtyard house was designed by Jamie Bush + Co., surrounded by abundant Japanese gardens in Santa Monica, California. The exterior facade of this residence offers a sober aesthetic; a mix of board formed concrete on the first level and redwood on the upper level. The material elements applied on the exterior helps to set the stage for what is within.
The interiors are characterized by “rich, natural notes of cherry paneling, bentwood armchairs and slate flooring effortlessly speak through the home’s glass walls to a landscape formed from a rock garden, koi pond and lush, expansive lawn,”—states Jamie Bush.
“The strong, Asian spirit emanating from architectural elements like the extended roof readily embraces the Western furnishings – both inside and out – beneath it. In the family room, the fireplace’s concrete and steel are reflected in the grey window-seat upholstery and the redwood ceiling provided the color cues for the paprika-hued suede ottomans.”—Jamie Bush
What We Love: This modern courtyard house features a stunning indoor-outdoor connection, surrounded by verdant gardens and lovely outdoor spaces. This home has an added warmth with the use of wood on the ceiling, built-ins and trim details. With an open and spacious floor plan, mid-century details and touches of Asian-influences, this is another fantastic design by Jamie Bush… would you agree?
