This mountain contemporary home was designed by Centre Sky Architecture, surrounded by a mature forest of ponderosa pines in Flagstaff, Arizona. Nestled at 6,909 feet of elevation, Flagstaff is considered to be the beautiful high country desert of Arizona. It is a very desirable area to visit for those living in Phoenix, with cooler temperatures in the summer and snow during the winter months.
The architects worked with the client to create an artful masterpiece that is completely unique. The homeowner is Jason Scott, owner of theย Jason Scott Collection, who helped to craft a home that stands as a culmination of his work. Jason had begun his work in 1995 in a small village in Indonesia, manufacturing furnishings from reclaimed teak salvaged from abandoned structures. At present,ย Jason has a team of over 200 craftsmen who work together to design beautiful, quality heirloom pieces of furniture.
The architectural design scheme of thisย project involves heavy Asian influences mixed with a Mountain West flare. Maximizing the use of the site was important to how the form and structure evolved early on in the design phase. The architects also needed to design around the 60-100 foot towering ponderosa pines, which also made an impact on the shape of the structure.ย The structure ended up taking on a horizontal theme, which resulted from the combination of vertical forms from the trees and the Asian influenced design.
Throughout the interiors you will find unique components sourced from Indonesia, creating an intricate puzzle of design, each having a story to tell. From the architects website: “The 150 year old ceiling panels salvaged from a Javanese sugar plantation were transformed to become exterior siding panels on the home. A 200 year old iron wood from a Borneo railroad bridge was re-purposed as a massive deck post and beams. The 30 foot bridge constructed for the house was crafted from reclaimed posts, accented with a carved ceiling and glass floor panels… the list goes on.”
” Coordinating the numerous unique pieces to form a cohesive design was a true collaboration,” states the architects. “We combined the Asian influences with Mountain West forms and layout allowing for more open spaces and a modern feel.”
What We Love: This mountain contemporary home was recently featured in Phoenix Home and Garden Magazine and rightly so. From the outside to the inside, this home radiates with attractive design features. We love the use of salvaged materials throughout the home, adding character and charm.
