This modern mountain retreat was designed by Walton Architecture in collaboration with designer Dara Rosenfeld, located in Martis Camp, a luxury community in Lake Tahoe, California. The homeowner’s are full-time residents from the Bay area, looking to have a comfortable vacation retreat for their family. The style was to be clean lines in a contemporary style with rustic nuances. The architecture was the dominating force, so the design scheme needed to be a seamless extension of this. The architect selected rustic elements of wood and stone, set off by glass and steel, infusing a more modern aesthetic. The exterior facade features reclaimed-barnwood siding and basalt stone, which mimics the ruggedness of the home’s surroundings. The dwelling rests on a irregularly shaped lot with captivating views. The architect made the most of this site by making the home feel like it is an extension of the land, unfolding as naturally as possible.

The structure is sprawled out on the site, from box forms to shed forms; perfectly capturing vistas of Lookout Mountain in the distance as well as a golf course. Outdoor terraces were designed to also enjoy the views and fresh mountain air. A relaxed indoor-outdoor lifestyle was created to make entertaining guests more simplified. The flooring of the terraces is comprised of Frontier sandstone. The flooring was selected for its durability, as it is well-equipped to handle both freezing and thawing. Metal railings come equipped with both built-in lighting and surround sound speakers.

What We Love: This modern mountain retreat reflects a harmonious flow between indoors and out that makes it perfectly in tune with its surrounding natural environment. The architecture and design are characterized by a rustic-modern aesthetic that meshes beautifully with the site. Every detail was well planned and articulated, celebrating the mountain lifestyle that these homeowners yearn for.

The architect repeated the stone from the exterior onto the living room fireplace, however instead of brining in the barnwood as well, she instead wrapped the walls and ceiling with clear cedar. This gives the interiors a more refined, sophisticated aesthetic. With the backdrop set, designer Dara Rosenfeld infused colors and furnishings that would meld with the modern-rustic aesthetic. The designer focused on the homeowners requests: he loves gray-blue, where she requested for some chartreuse—where color pops can be seen in the master bedroom.

With neutral furnishings as the base, the art was then able to pop off the walls and create visual interest.
