This modern home was createdย with simplicity of design and openness to its natural environment by Christopher Simmonds Architect, located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Nestled inย Dunrobin Shore facing the Ottawa river, walls of glass spans the living, dining and kitchen areas; showcasing panoramic vistas of the changing seasons. “Away from the water the view is framed and edited by a simple porch, ” states the architects. “The porch roof has been opened to create space for nature- a single Japanese maple is inserted as a foil to the simple black stained cedar cladding of the house. The garage volume is differentiated from the house by a cladding of grey cement board.” Impressively, this home was the recipient of theย 2014 GOHBA Housing Design Award Winner: Best Custom Home (in its size category).
“The juxtaposition of natural and industrial materials continues on the interior; bamboo stair treads complement polished concrete floors in the lower level,” states the architect. Bamboo flooring and cabinetry infusesย warmth to the master bedroom suite. The open-riser staircase with its glass guardrail helps to connect the lower level family room to the main living space.
What We Love: This modern home is a personal oasis in a suburban environment so close to a metropolitan city center. A custom designed home that caters to modern family living, spaciously spread out over two levels. The interiors are bright and airy with expansive views to the lush greenery outside. The home was beautifully created on a modest budget with great attention to detail and meticulous use of materials.
