This modernist seaside retreat features newly renovated interiors by Jamie Bush, located in the bluffs above Malibu, California, with sweeping views over the Pacific Ocean. The home was originally constructed in the 70s, offering 3,400 square feet of living space with four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms. The project encompassed a full gut-remodel, transforming into a warm, organic, modernist beach house.

Architecture studio Modal Design, was tasked with taking an existing structure from extremely undesirable to making it into an architecturally compelling abode. The architects transformed previously chopped up main living spaces into a fabulous open layout. Roof decks were expanded, orienting them towards the ocean and blurring the connection between the indoor and outdoor living spaces. Interior designer Jamie Bush was introduced into this renovation project early on, helping to define the overall design aesthetic. The design team selected all the architectural finishes, such as the silver travertine flooring, cerused gray oak paneling, flooring and cabinetry, bronze and silver metals, and textural cork wallpaper, contrasting nicely against crisp white plaster.

Jamie Bush: “The natural imperfections of the materials become the decoration: whether it be inclusions in the hand blown glass sconces, irregular veining in the marble bench, or growth rings in the wood coffee table.”

According to Jamie, “The furnishings are a combination of custom design and found sculptural pieces. The focus was to express the natural materials of the pieces in a bold yet honest way.” The designer’s goal was to create an ethereal, sun-kissed natural palette, echoing its surroundings.
