This two story loft apartment transformation features soaring ceilings and amazing flow, designed by interior architect Bethlehem Ferrándiz, located in Madrid, Spain. The owner is a young executive in the advertising business, looking to have a hip apartment with clean lines and functional spaces. Originally the apartment was very compartmentalized, far from ideal. The renovation helped to open up the living environment and to achieve the feeling of living in a unique space with a light flow on both levels. To achieve the openness, glass was a key material used. Installed in key areas of the home, it creates a visual connection between spaces, yet also prolongs perspective, achieving a feeling of spaciousness. The kitchen door features a sliding glass panel to section it off from the rest of the apartment if need be. There is also glass along one wall of the kitchen, which helps to filter in more natural light. The railing on the top floor of the bedroom is also comprised of glass to allow transparency and the feeling of spaciousness.
An additional important change was made in the kitchen, a wall was recessed in to create more space to include a breakfast bar. Wall finishes were critical to complete the clean modern aesthetic. Cherry laminate flooring was replaced with aged oak floorboards running vertically towards the windows, visually expanding the space. Even the staircase was given a modern makeover of cherry wood covered with a gray carpeting, creating a vinyl metallic effect.
