Hoedemaker Pfeiffer designed a Bainbridge Island, Washington home whose exterior facade is inspired by the timeless architecture of the English Cotswolds, featuring steel windows and ashlar stone, while reflecting the natural palette and sensibility of the Pacific Northwest. Strict shoreline regulations and site constraints necessitated that the architects work mainly within the original footprint.
The design revolves around a grand great room boasting sweeping views of the cove, the Sound, and beyond to a sandy spit. A smaller, intimate gathering space provides a cozy atmosphere with a piano, TV, and a covered patio at the waterโs edge. โInside, the design embraces tradition with a modern twist, highlighting rich materials in key areas.

A standout feature from the original home, the grand cedar shakes that line the entry walls, are reused to celebrate the homeโs Pacific Northwest setting under a canopy of trees.
A slight expansion away from the water improves the entry and mudroom experience, where the cedar shakes of the original home add warmth and character. The nearby powder room is bold and refined, with blackened plaster walls. The expanded layout provides space for three en-suite bedrooms on the top floor.
Echoing the theme of reinvention, the carriage house retains its original footprint while expanding to a full two floors, offering a welcoming retreat for guests. Its exterior becomes a quiet shadow in the trees, allowing the main house to take prominence.
What We Love: This Cotswolds-inspired home beautifully honors Bainbridge Islandโs vernacular while infusing it with countryside cottage charm. Nestled on a remarkable site, this home enjoys the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Our favorite feature of this home is the great room. Designed to be on the corner of the property that faces the spit, it provides the feeling of being surrounded by water on all three sides, all while enjoying the warmth of a cozy fireplace.โ
