Barnes Vanze Architects has created this modern English country home by connecting the new home to an existing log cabin with a glass “link”, nestled on 5.05 acres in Vienna, Virginia. This inspiring custom home seamlessly blends rustic aesthetics and contemporary design details, encompassing 7,164 square feet with five bedrooms and six-and-a-half bathrooms.
The interior finishes include roughhewn lumber beams, and stone and wood floors which are inspired by the restored cabin itself. Advanced exterior wall design provides climate, moisture, and energy protection as well as sophisticated high-tech sound and computer technologies, which are seamless with the traditional details of the home.

The exterior of this house is organized with a restored log cabin at one end, a three-bay garage with an upstairs office at the other, and a tranquil backdrop of woods.
Outside, a thoughtfully considered site plan blends pastoral elements of a bygone era, such as a crabapple-lined driveway, a front facade adorned with boxwood and sweetbox, and a perennial border featuring iris, daisy, and assorted herbs encircling the pool.
What We Love: This countryside home beautifully melds old with new, providing its inhabitants with stylish yet comfortable living spaces that are loaded with warmth. Large windows throughout this home not only help to bring in the natural light but also capture the lovely woodsy views that surround the home. Overall, the bespoke interiors perfectly complement the structural elements of the dwelling blending the ideals of country living with modern sensibilities.

Above: The heart of the home is this double-volume great room. This space is loaded with warmth thanks to the wood flooring, beams, and trusses. An abundance of natural light floods into this space through the French doors and large clerestory windows above. The sculpture-like art over the fireplace is by artist Mary Little.
Lauren Liess Interiors custom-designed many of the furniture pieces throughout this home, which can be found at Woodbridge Furniture. The designer’s goal was to bring some patina into this newly constructed home. It’s all about mixing old, new, and earthy with some moody dark moments.

Above: The renovation of this historic log cabin resulted in raising the low-pitch roof into a cathedral ceiling. The addition of insulation and electricity transformed the space into a functional, cozy room. It is now used as a family room for entertaining, featuring a large dining table that can host up to 20 dinner guests. The original fireplace was preserved and in working order.

Above: A dark-wood paneled library provides a cozy respite for the owners of this countryside home. The built-in framed opening leads to the main stair hall and entry foyer.
Above: The most significant piece of art in this home is the salvaged door that originally belonged to the 1800s log cabin. It can be seen on the wall of the main staircase. It serves as a reminder of the past linked to the present in this architectural marvel.
