Swan Architecture together with Elevation Homes created this stunning Eichler-inspired, California coastal modern dream house nestled in Morningside, a neighborhood in Edina, Minnesota. The design style of this home was inspired by the casual sophistication and laid-back charm of West Coast living.

The expansive windows, organic material selection, and cool, white color palette convey a tranquil and relaxed feeling throughout the main house, cabana guest house, and poolside patio. All furnishings throughout this light-filled home were sourced from furniture retailer Room & Board.

What We Love: This modern dream house in Minnesota offers pared-back, sophisticated styling that is warm and inviting. Extensive glazing helps to blur the boundaries between indoors and out while helping to illuminate this two-story dwelling with natural light. A large patio and swimming pool in the backyard are ideal for family living and entertaining. Overall we love the crisp, clean lines of the interiors and the harmonious flow that makes living here so effortless.

The homeowners were fans of the modern design of Joseph Eichler, an influential real estate developer of midcentury modern ranch-style housing in the 1950s and ’60s.

The owners are raising two young children while both working demanding jobs. They have intentionally transformed their casual suburban home into their version of a laid-back sunny Laguna Beach residence. It makes it harder to leave for work but much more fun for their family.

By Edina, Minnesota standards, this is really an estate lot, longer and wider than most – and you feel the space when hanging out around the pool. The lot has room for the home, a generous front yard, a pool, a wonderfully sized patio area, and plenty of green space left over.⠀

Sightlines throughout the entire main floor and to the outdoor space make keeping track of kids much easier. This home was designed to make the owner’s day-to-day lives easier (and more calm). This bright clean space even makes the winter months feel warm.⠀⠀⠀

Above: In competition for the focal point of the main living space is the stone fireplace sourced from Africa and the floor-to-ceiling windows. “The extensive use of glass, open floor plan, simplicity and integration with the outdoors” gives the home a modern California style.

Above: A flex room, off of the main living space, protects the rest of the home from television noise and conference calls with the stunning glass doors – which allow for maximum light to shine in.

Above: The beach-house vibe is very apparent through shiplap on walls and ceilings, knotty pine across the staircase wall, and light-stained floors and woodwork. The staircase is held back to allow for a full wall of glass, a theme seen throughout the home.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Above: Every coastal home needs a good pool cabana, but this one is better than most! Connected to the main home through a breezeway and is complete with a full bathroom and walk-in closet. This space is a true extension of the house proper, giving the owners a bit of a bonus space that allows guests to feel at home while not dragging wet bathing suits through the home.⠀

Above: This interior space is the pool cabana breezeway: A multi-purpose area that connects the main living space to the cabana. The flooring is a heated tile and the space contains a microwave, cooler, and washer/dryer. This is a super helpful area, not unlike the cabana – guests can help themselves with drinks and kids can access frozen treats without getting into the house proper.
