Levy Art + Architecture together with Sayde Mark Designs have renovated this modern family home situated in Potrero Hill, San Francisco, California. Initially envisioning a monochromatic grey exterior, the homeowners instead decided to let their personality shine through by adding accents of yellow to highlight the double-canted roof.
Additionally, the base of the structure features exposed board-form concrete, providing a striking contrast and adding to the home’s modern aesthetic. A new Dutch-inspired electric hoist was installed at the front of the house, capable of hoisting up to 880 pounds. The architect humorously remarks that it can lift “a lot of beer and party supplies,” in addition to groceries and laundry.
Constructed in 1903, the owners purchased this dwelling back in 2001. The original house was dark and closed off, providing no views of their spectacular surroundings. The project team revamped the entire house, added a third floor to their abode, and tacked on a trio of terraces.
This updated modern California home now offers a fabulous indoor-outdoor living environment with its tri-level decks that maximize living space. Sliding glass doors on the upper level, pocketing doors on the middle level, and roll-up garage doors on the ground level provide flexibility and match this dwelling’s unique, modern architecture. The backyard features bold pink, yellow, and teal hues that complement the owner’s playful personality.
A rooftop deck provides this modern California home with sweeping views over the city. Pops of color on the outdoor furnishings match the home’s exterior palette. The cable railings provide unobstructed views of the surrounding hills as well as safety.
The living and dining room area has an open and airy layout that extends to the elevated deck for an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. The flooring is oak, which can also be found on the ceiling. The modern artwork adds a pop of color to this space, which is decorated with a Scandinavian modern flair.

This loft-style living space is perfect for entertaining with its open kitchen, dining, and living room layout. The oak accent wall and ceiling treatment help to delineate the dining and living areas with the kitchen.
In the kitchen, the homeowner opted to use wooden swings instead of traditional bar stools. The idea for the swings was inspired by a trip to Tulum, Mexico many years ago, where similar swings were used in a bar. The kitchen is a fun space for the parents, their kids, and their friends.
The contemporary owner’s bedroom seamlessly connects to a deck through folding pocket doors, offering an indoor-outdoor feel. Featuring sleek, low-profile furnishings, the room accentuates its lofty ceilings. White walls and light oak floors serve as a canvas for colorful artwork and accents.
The owner’s bathroom features doors that open to the backyard deck where wood barriers allow privacy. The husband is an avid surfer and wanted the feeling of showering in the great outdoors. The serene color palette provides a calming environment.
In this powder room, an octopus wallpaper in black and white adds a touch of whimsy. Modern plumbing fixtures complement the graphic wallpaper, allowing it to serve as a focal point of the space. A pop of red adds an eye-catching accent.
In this kid’s bathroom, you will find pops of color and pattern. A color scheme of blue and orange sets the tone for a playful and creative space that kids will be sure to love. Clean white walls, floors, and cabinets provide a neutral backdrop, allowing the colorful accents to pop.
