Carney Logan Burke Architects designed this stunning mountain retreat set amidst the grandeur of the Teton Pass, a high mountain pass at the southern end of the Teton Range in western Wyoming. Embraced by panoramic mountain vistas, this dwelling belongs to a family of five with a deep love for the outdoors, who relocated from the San Francisco Bay Area.

They were seeking a mountain haven as their base camp for all the incredible experiences this region has to offer. The architects orientated the home on the property to take advantage of the open views on the property.

Set on an east/west access, they were able to gain privacy and plenty of natural light on the outdoor, west-facing terrace. The program is made up of a 5,300-square-foot main residence, a guesthouse for their in-laws, and a gear barn to store outdoor equipment. Gorgeous landscaping around the property includes a pond and waterfall.

To integrate the breathtaking beauty of this home’s surroundings, the architects integrated plenty of windows throughout to create a sense of being outside even when indoors. For the interior scheme, the designer employed a color palette of natural woods, contrasting beautifully with the walnut floors.

The home was designed to be warm and contemporary. The architects selected black walnut for the flooring and hemlock for the ceiling. Much thought went into the kitchen, pantry, and bar design; the sizing of locally made custom elements like wood slab tables; and striking a balance between intimacy and the capacity to entertain large groups.

The collaborative approach resulted in an open, airy, nature-inspired home that makes the most of its site while meeting the lifestyle needs of a busy family.

The beauty of nature that surrounds this home creates a relaxed vibe, where large windows take advantage of the superb mountain views.

Spread out over two levels, the bedrooms and utilities can be found on the main level, while the master suite is on the upper level to take advantage of enhanced views. The master suite’s sitting room has a built-in daybed that connects to the sitting room outside the children’s’ rooms via a floating bridge that passes above this dwelling’s main entry.

The main structure’s zinc panels, cedar planking and stone are mimicked in the smaller guest house set amidst the aspens a short distance away. The main dwelling takes shape in two volumes. The flat roofline of the mostly transparent single story — which encompasses the open plan kitchen/living/dining areas — extends over an outdoor living room anchored on either side by twin fireplace masses.
