A midcentury house nestled in a lush wooded landscape in Portland, Oregon

This midcentury modern house is a remodel and expansion project by Skylab Architecture, located in the NW Portland hills, Oregon. The 4,582-square-foot dwelling is nestled in a lush, wooded landscape and features a secluded courtyard that connects to a pine forest and provides views of the hills and beyond.

The home is positioned to capture spectacular views of the hills and beyond to the west. A pool addition further expands the house to create an outdoor living room and kitchen for entertaining. Continue below for the rest of the home tour along with the “before the renovation images”.

Inspired by Kandinsky’s abstract artwork, the residence is a collage of spaces made for a growing family. The three wings of the timber-framed house on the ground level create circulation along the landscaped courtyard, garden, and pool.

Within the original wing, the kitchen is expanded and relocated closer to the main entrance with an addition of an open dining room. The adjacent wing is a casual living area and office space with views of the horizon and pool.

The third sleeping wing addition includes three ground-floor garden-access bedrooms and one elevated second-level master suite. A new transparent staircase was designed as a key focal element of the new wing, leading to the master suite.

What We Love: This midcentury house in Oregon has undergone an amazing transformation with bright and airy living spaces. Overall the architects did a fabulous job of capitalizing on the views and connecting this home with nature. The newly revived house offers an open floor plan, beautiful outdoor living spaces for entertaining, and a sumptuous swimming pool that enjoys tranquil surroundings.
