Murphy & Co Design together with Martha Dayton Design designed this 4,500 square foot Scandinavian midcentury-modern inspired home, nestled along Lake Minnewashta, Minnesota. The scope of this project was to create a casually elegant lake house with a simple palette of raw materials and richly textured furnishings.

With a material palette of stone, concrete, steel, and wood, the designer worked to create an inviting home using an abundance of texture and movement. Typically when entertaining, family and friends congregate in the kitchen. Above: The exterior facade of this home features wood siding, concrete, and a long single-gable, metal roof. The concrete walls were poured on-site by Excel Concrete. The craftsmanship of the interior/exterior walls is perfect, and the openings perfectly match the exact window specifications. 

Above: A long hallway by the front entry features slat wood paneling for visual interest, custom fabricated by Frost Cabinets. The spindle leg table is a 16th-century piece.

What We Love: This Scandinavian midcentury-modern inspired home provides a couple of empty nesters with living spaces that are intimate yet open and inviting for entertaining their family and friends. High-quality craftsmanship can be found throughout this home, from the dramatic staircase to the handpicked stones on the living room wall to the poured-in-place concrete walls on the exterior facade. Every detail in this home is incredible and the lake views are the icing on the cake.

Above: The metal floating staircase was custom fabricated by Bold Metal Work.

Above: A double-story wall in the living room is clad with fieldstone, taking over 1,000 hours to construct. It was handpicked for size and color and stacked one by one to create balance and an attractive composition. The stone bisects the front of the dwelling and delineates the main and guest bedroom wings.

Above: The kitchen features rift-sawn white oak cabinetry, bringing warmth to the polished concrete floors. The island has plenty of easy-access drawers for cooking prep. The Arc Globe 10″ pendants are from Allied Maker.

Above: An accent wall in this powder room features Christian Lacroix ‘Prete-Moi Ta Plume!’ Wallpaper. The vanity is a one-of-a-kind piece.

Above: In the home office, the walls are painted in a ultra-high-gloss Navy Blue from Fine Paints of Europe. The lustrous hue bounces light and helps to create an intimate atmosphere.

Above: This cozy family room features a wood-burning fireplace with a niche for storing wood, which can be fed from outside the house.

Above: Almost every room in this home showcases a view of the lake, including the laundry and mudroom. There is a garden just off the rear deck that offers fresh herbs and veggies all summer long. Perfect for these homeowners that enjoy cooking from scratch daily.
