This rustic mountain cabin designed as a cozy getaway home by JLF Architects in collaboration with OSM Construction is located in the Yellowstone Club community of Big Sky, Montana. The owners are a couple whose primary residence is in London who fell in love with this beautiful Montana property with a dense forest of towering lodgepole pines.
Encompassing 7,500 square feet of living space, the dwelling was segmented into three structures to break down the mass. The series of structures are interconnected via glass corridors. Construction materials include stacked Montana moss rock, lodgepole pines from the site, wood from a 100-year-old timber frame barn, and repurposed remnants of an old cottage — all paying homage to the region’s 19th-century homesteaders.

While the modern element of oversized steel-and-glass true-divided-light windows departs from its small cabin inspiration, the dwelling maintains a modest quality that exudes comfort and approachable ease.

This home was decorated with a curated selection of furnishings and antiques, many of which were collected while the homeowners were living abroad. The interior designer mixed old and new furnishings, rugs, art, and accessories to achieve a timeless, lived-in feel. The color palette is inspired by the natural surroundings.

Above: In the bathroom, the architects incorporated large sheets of glass into the stone floors and walls, creating a shower enclosure that mandated exceptional craftsmanship. Notably, there is no frame or transition material, creating a seamless and elegant design.
