Step into this modern meets rustic retreat surrounded by nature in Montana

modern rustic living room with a fireplace

Fullerton Architects in collaboration with Kylee Shintaffer Design have designed this breathtaking modern rustic retreat that is located in Bigfork, Montana. This dwelling was constructed as a getaway home for a family with four college-age children whose primary residence is based in Texas.

Their vision was to create a gathering place where they could immerse themselves in nature and be surrounded by the outdoor activities that they enjoy doing together, as well as a place to eventually retire. The wife desired a white farmhouse, while the husband dreamed of a rustic, woodsy retreat. The outcome was to harmoniously merge these two visions — blending materials and furnishings to achieve an “elevated rustic style”.

Organic elements were incorporated into the home to create a seamless connection with the terrain. This includes Montana Moss Rock and reclaimed timbers for the ceiling. These elements, along with the versatile “barn” that serves as a garage and guesthouse, effectively fulfilled the desire for the rustic retreat.

To achieve the white farmhouse aesthetic, the designer illuminated the interiors by whitewashing the wood walls and introducing contrasting accents.  To add a visually striking contrast against the lighter wood walls, a wood window was stained in a darker shade.

The interior of this dwelling features white-washed cedar paneling that counterbalances the darker timbers, adding character and depth. The blend of modern and rustic elements creates an inviting atmosphere that prevents the home from feeling too perfect or formal.
