In central Austin, Texas, the challenge faced by the A Parallel Architecture team was to expand and breathe new life into a once stately Georgian Revival home. The objective was to distinctively highlight and celebrate the contrast between the old and the new.
Here, the minimalist modern additions are designed to contrast with the classical grandeur and symmetry of the meticulously restored original structure. Continue below to see the rest of this spectacular home tour…

The original Georgian-Revival home, known for its symmetrical layout and thickened walls, now boasts an organic, open-plan extension that emphasizes the connection with the outdoors with glass walls, large overhangs, and indeterminate thresholds.
The physical link between the old and new structures is seamless, and this transition is celebrated. As you traverse from the solid perimeter walls of the original building to the interior of the house, clean and sleek finishes gradually give way to textured and finely detailed elements.
The original moldings, doors, and hardware have been meticulously restored, while a new helical staircase pays homage to an original feature that couldn’t be salvaged. This revitalized dwelling stands as a testament to enduring care and craft in architecture and is intended to serve many generations to come.

What We Love: This Georgian Revival home in Texas celebrates the seamless physical link between old and new structures, the transition from sleek to finely detailed finishes, and the meticulous restoration of original elements. We especially love the addition of the helical staircase, a striking sculptural focal point to the entry of this home. Overall, the project team did a fabulous job of reimagining this home to meet the new owner’s lifestyle needs.
