This river house is a historic property that has been completely reimagined by J Hurst & Associates in collaboration with Beth Howley Creative, nestled on the Kalamazoo River that leads to Lake Michigan. When the team began this project, the home was dark and dingy with vintage wood on every wall and floor surface.
They carefully preserved and restored the paneling and floors while adding clean, modern design details. The old elements found new life through the application of freshly painted surfaces, dynamic lighting, and the introduction of a funky cocktail lounge on the lower level. In response to the needs of the homeowners, three new bedrooms and two additional bathrooms were added, ensuring effortless and enjoyable entertaining experiences for family and guests. Bright pops from colorful custom cabinets and art on a backdrop of crisp white walls truly make this dwelling shine.
Above: The project team was able to preserve most of the original paneling in this dwelling, although there was not enough to fill every wall because of the changes made to the space. This gave way to a light-filled foyer with the perfect balance of both smooth painted surfaces and refreshed 1840s paneling. Hanging from the ceiling, the Kelly Wearstler Strada Chandelier from Visual Comfort provides a striking welcome.
What We Love: This historic river house was completely transformed to provide a wonderful respite for its lucky inhabitants. We are loving that the design team preserved a lot of the details in this home while modernizing spaces with materials and finishes to update the aesthetics. We are especially admiring the living room with its refinished wood beams and ceiling along with the painted fireplace surround, allowing the colorful artwork to pop.

Above: This beautifully curated gallery wall was put together by the homewoner. The crisp white walls and the restored vintage wood floors serve as the perfect backdrop to these carefully selected, colorful and striking pieces of art.
Above: To let the light in, the project team took down the wall blocking the door to the back of the home and relocated the refrigerator to a closet that previously held a stacking washer and dryer. With a new island, cabinet faces, backsplash, and a ceiling to match the original, this kitchen looks fresh and new. Painted in Oystershell 864 – Benjamin Moore, the cabinets look soft and dynamic in the natural light.
