Patrick Ahearn Architect was commissioned to renovate and expand this early-1900s shingle-style home that is located in Osterville, a beautiful seaside town on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This property had been in the family for generations and was in need of a refresh in order to meet the needs of a modern family.
The scope of the project included the renovation and expansion of the main residence along with the addition of a new multi-functional carriage house, pool, and cabana. It was important to keep the old home’s traditional feel and look while making it a more modern and livable space for this family of five and a dog.

In the main house, only the bones remain. A previous maze of rooms was replaced with a program that meets the needs of todayโs discerning family. Symmetry and logic were inserted by centering the front door, adding a pair of balanced chimneys to the roofline, and rhythmically placing windows on the exterior.
New bay windows repeat on the front- and back-facing gambrels, as do double-decker porches which add romance and character.
The outdoor program is comprehensive and inviting, maximizing opportunities for enjoyment on a parcel just larger than half an acre. Guest quarters above the carriage house and a full aquatic program make hosting guests a joy at what is now a magnificent summertime retreat.

Design plans were created for each room to achieve the familyโs vision of casual sophistication and a welcoming atmosphere for entertaining and enjoying the summer season. Simultaneously, these plans were thoughtfully devised to pay homage to the dwelling’s rich history, preserving a nostalgic essence throughout.
