Scott Edwards Architecture has designed this modern cantilevered house that is located in Oregon’s wine country in the Chehalem Mountains. This lookout house is perched on its site, providing unparalleled mountain views of five different ranges — Jefferson, Hood, Adams, St. Helens, and Rainier.
The architects were faced with the challenge of positioning the home on its site to maximize the spectacular scenery while still maintaining its intimate connection with the sloped landscape. This challenge also presented the opportunity to devise a solution that would be unique and at the same time fulfill the homeowner’s vision. The end result is a warm, modern home that immerses its occupants in the Pacific Northwest.
This 4,500 square foot dwelling is organized in a bar traveling south to north with exterior covered spaces carving away at the volume of the bar. The majority of the residence boasts floor-to-ceiling glazing, and sliding doors integrated into every east-facing room, all with the intent to blur the lines between indoors and out.
“The cantilever is supported by a concrete double-sided fireplace and chimney structure and floats above the landscape as it slopes more steeply to the north into the valley of a small perennial creek,” states the architects.
The interior living spaces are modern and clean, with a palette of contrasting blacks and whites and polished concrete floors.

Note: Be sure to check out a couple of other spectacular home tours that we have highlighted here on One Kindesign in the state of Oregon: This mid-century ranch house gets a brilliant update in Portland and A breathtaking glass house in harmony with the wild woodlands of Oregon.
A variety of wood accents, such as the feature stair treads and the kitchen island, are used throughout the home to warm the space and mimic the surrounding forest.
The design honors the indoor-outdoor aesthetic by melding the interiors with the architecture outside, with an example being the main bathroom’s dark wall connecting to the exterior volume on that side of the house. One of the homeowner’s is an artist, so care was taken to select the optimal area of the dwelling for a luminous art studio.
The strategic use of contrasting materials such as concrete, wood, and steel is utilized throughout, imparting a richness and organic feel to this minimalist house. Thoughtfully selected moments in the interior encourage inhabitants to pause and soak in the views and curated art.
