A 1920s Spanish Revival home has undergone a complete refresh by Medium Plenty in collaboration with Regan Baker Design, located in San Francisco, California. The project team transformed this dwelling into a four-story dream house for this family of four their frequent overnight guests.
They preserved the spirit of the original structure, yet revitalized it with fresh imagination, sustainable materials, modern design elements, and state-of-the-art technology. The finished result is an exciting space with an amazing character that highlights the thematic aims of cohesion and transparency.

Above: The entryway sets the tone for the entire home, featuring a spectacular Art Nouveau carved wood bench attributed to Antoni Guadí and a 1930s French light fixture.
The dwelling was made more spacious while also maintaining a sense of privacy. The architects expanded the structure to three stories by excavating the earth to devise a lower level. They also added a roof deck that includes an outdoor kitchen. The home’s facade maintains a quiet street presence, while the back of the home is bolder, with grand windows that face a private yard and terraced gardens.
This home incorporates a mix of modern style and Art Deco influence. Highlights include a library, elevator, tasting room, and a lower-level in-law suite that is perfect for long-term guests.
What We Love: This Spanish Revival home refresh provides its owners with bright and beautiful living spaces for everyday light and entertaining. Enhancing the living spaces to spread out over four levels, this home can now comfortably accommodate overnight guests while also providing plenty of space for privacy. We are loving the mix of new and old and the indoor-outdoor connection through large walls of glazing at the rear of the home.

Blackened steel casement windows can be found throughout this dwelling, providing contrast and a classic look.
Above: Suspended above the dining room table is a vintage 1960s brass pendant, in the style of French lighting designer Jean Perzel. The light fixture provides a geometric, Art Deco focal point.
A custom-fabricated steel and wood staircase is both the centerpiece and spine of this spectacular residence. A continuous ribbon window accentuates the staircase and provides an abundance of natural light. This staircase connects all four levels, which includes a rooftop deck with a hot tub and raised vegetable/herb garden.
Above: The cozy home library is situated between the owner’s bedroom and the two children’s bedrooms. It is a quiet respite for the family to play, read or work. The fireplace mantel is composed of black marble. The vintage and antique table, chairs, and sofa add to this home’s storied past, while the brass starburst ceiling fixture brings ‘20s-era glamour.
Above: The main bedroom features neutral bedding to allow the antique, muted rose-colored rug to pop. The designer’s created a custom cabinet to house the laundry hampers and pajamas. Layers of texture were infused into this space through vintage brass lamps and an effervescent crystal chandelier.
Above: In the bathroom, the custom vanity appears like a traditional dresser with a marble countertop and sinks. To bathe this space with natural light, the shower is topped with a frameless skylight to provide the feeling of bathing in the open air.
Above: In the shower, the white and grey patterned wall tile recalls the home’s original Spanish style.
Above: The lower level of this home features a guest bedroom, bunk room, living area, and a kitchen concealed behind oak doors.
Above: The lower level also features a tasting room with deep green walls, a cognac-hued leather banquette, walnut countertops, and brass hardware for an English pub-inspired aesthetic.
Above: The bunkroom scheme is in a playful teal hue. On the floor is a Vivienne Westwood cut pile rug in custom colors. The bunk beds are custom fabricated for longer beds and enhanced headroom space between the bunks. There are also niche wall shelves to store books and other amenities.
