A simple craftsman cottage was transformed into a beautiful modern family home by DeForest Architects, located in Seattle, Washington. This project entails a second floor addition along with e complete renovation the entire home to reflect crisp lines, warmth and simplicity. The homeowners needed more space to accommodate their growing family and frequent guests.
Interior spaces are characterized by cool colors, Scandinavian design, and warm minimalism. The family desired a finished space that felt balanced and serene, reflecting the neighborhood’s rich Nordic history and close proximity to water. A soft palette reflects the local climate and allows for flexibility in decoration as the house ages.

A masonry fireplace was removed and the stairs were relocated to the center of the dwelling. This meant less area used for circulation and more for a spacious mudroom and a bright basement bedroom. Clean, modern takes on traditional details tie together the new work with the original house. The home now offers 3,000 square feet of living space for the family to live comfortably.
Custom details can be found in each room: from floating nightstands with Japanese hardware in the main bedroom to a bespoke coffee table designed for the living room and manufactured just down the street.
What We Love: This reimagined craftsman cottage in Seattle offers its inhabitants an open and airy new look with a calming and serene atmosphere. Living spaces were designed to be more defined and functional with plenty of storage space to keep clutter at bay. We are loving the overall design of this home, from the second story addition for more bedroom space to the cozy outdoor deck covered by a tree canopy — to the pops of blue inspired by the owner’s childhood summers spent sailing.

High-contrast finishes were chosen for select fixtures and surfaces to provide quiet interest and variation. Detailing of simple materials like white tile, quartz, white oak, and Douglas fir was handled with precision in order to achieve seamless, clean transitions between surfaces.
Careful thought was put into eliminating clutter and providing space for family togetherness. The palette of blues is reminiscent of the owner’s childhood summers sailing on Long Island Sound.
