A modern pavilion house with astounding views of the Wasatch Mountains

modern-mountain-home-exterior

Olson Kundig Architects has designed this incredible modern house composed of three distinct pavilions offering majestic views of the Wasatch Mountains in Salt Lake City, Utah. Each of these pavilions provide an abundance of space for large gatherings, yet can still feel intimate when it is quiet family time.

By separating the home into a trio of pavilions, the architects were able to devise a closer relationship between the architecture and nature, with the landscape intermingling around both the public and private spaces. The first pavilion encompasses the main living spaces, where an entry box leads into the living room and a spectacular library. Continue below to see the rest of this unique home…

What We Love: This modern pavilion house provides its occupants with dramatic views of the surrounding mountains with intimate spaces for family gathering and entertaining. We are loving the overall concept of this residence, with separate yet interconnected spaces for various activities. The beauty of the landscape is well connected to the home from the architecture to the expansive glazing that soaks in the natural light and views.

Secret bookshelf doors flank either side of the library’s fireplace and open to reveal an office that features a custom fabricated blackened steel desk. Dark, rich materials – including fumed oak casework and floors and a bronze fireplace – transition to lighter, warmer materials in the central pavilion, which encompasses the kitchen, dining and family rooms.

Throughout the home, exposed timber ceilings and exterior overhangs and an interior palette of deep reds and greens are inspired by Salt Lake City’s forested landscape.

The third pavilion houses the main bedroom suite along with three children’s bedrooms, connected to the central pavilion via an enclosed, elevated walkway. The spectacular mountain ranges helped to inform the home’s orientation on the site. This includes the Oquirrh Mountains to the west and Wasatch Mountains to the east. In the main bedroom, walls of glazing frame views of Mount Olympus.

Now that’s a cantilever on the pool building if I ever saw one! Awesome, clean lines. Well done.

Commit to beams, and don’t look back.
