This seaside gambrel home designed by TMS Architects is nestled on an unspoiled oceanfront property in Rye, a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. The homeowners found this gorgeous piece of land that they desired to transform into a quiet retreat for their use after retirement.
This very inspiring site presented several challenges, including the owners’ desire to preserve several of the existing mature growth trees along with the elongated shape of the site. This made siting the home a cumbersome task. The final location of the new dwelling, close to a cul-de-sac, created a quiet haven in addition to offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.
The living spaces are oriented to maximize the views of the gardens and the water. The open concept of the first floor extends onto a centrally located generous patio that contributes to the strong link between the outside and inside of the home.
The owners’ wish to save existing trees and reuse existing architectural elements was a design guideline followed by the architectural team. As an example, the homeowners wished to reuse an existing stainless steel sink and drainage board in the mudroom. A galley-style mudroom was designed to incorporate this unusual sink. The combination of recycled and new elements all contribute to the beauty of the home.
Another personal touch is the custom stained glass windows created by the owner’s father. These windows are located as focal points in the hall and pantry and provide the home with a dramatic touch of color.
What We Love: This seaside gambrel home offers a couple a relaxing getaway by the ocean after they retire. Spread out over two levels, this wonderful floor plan was devised to maximize oceanfront views from almost every room in the home. Outdoor living spaces are equally wonderful, with an enticing swimming pool and plenty of lounging options for entertaining family and friends.
