This compact modern shelter designed by Anna-Marie Chin Architects features a backdrop of rugged mountains near Queenstown, New Zealand. Encompassing 1,679 square feet (156 square meters) of living space, this masterfully designed home meets the owner’s needs and relatively modest budget while challenging the design rules and constraints of an upmarket residential estate.
Spatially and formally rich, the structure is inspired by the traditional shed, yet the architect has twisted the type with an asymmetrical gable that creates dynamic elevations that relate to the local mountain landscape.

The organization of space and selection of materials are carefully controlled. The detailing is rigorous but, as indicated by the tall chimney that asserts itself against the building’s horizontality, there’s drama to go with the discipline.
NEED TO KNOW: Called “Tom’s House”, this idyllic New Zealand home can be rented as an Airbnb, sleeping up to 8 guests for $536/night.
ACCOLADES: Southern Architecture Awards Winner, New Zealand Architecture Awards Winner, Home Magazine, Home of the year – Best small home
