A Spanish-style house has undergone a complete renovation by Courtney Thomas Design in collaboration with KSM Construction, located in La Cañada, California. This is a Mills Act Home, a California program that allows owners of qualified historic homes to receive a property tax reduction.
The project team worked together to honor this architectural landmark home while carefully adapting its spaces to more modern living. What was needed in homes of the past does not necessarily meet the lifestyle needs of modern-day living. For this homeowner, their needs and lifestyle changes required a new approach and for spaces to adapt.
The finished result of this historical renovation project is a blend of old with new, presenting a curated, layered look.
What We Love: This beautiful home reflects contemporary Spanish-style interiors that have been meticulously appointed with a mix of old and new. The project team did a wonderful job of preserving this historical home, respecting its past while giving it new life that can be enjoyed by its occupants for years to come.

Above: The living room features an exquisite blend of textured rugs, bone inlay side tables, Asian ceramics, antique wood pieces, and custom, upholstered seating to create a layered, curated look.
Above: A TV over the mantle is concealed by a piece of art that rolls away with the push of a button.
Above: In one corner of the room sat a piano rarely played but whose corner position promised to be more frequently used by another piece of furniture, a custom bar.
Above: Once a bedroom, this room now serves as the family’s gathering place upstairs close to bedrooms and home offices. That burled wood waterfall table over the custom ottoman? We added castors to its base so it can be pulled close to the sofa when an extra place for work or a drink is needed.
Above: It was a dressing room before it became a home office; it was a pass-through before it became a quiet place to work.
