This minimalist weekend retreat was designed for empty nesters by Jim Jennings Architecture in collaboration with Leverone Design, located in Pebble Beach, a community on the Monterey Peninsula in Monterey County, California. Rising up from the coastal bluffs above Pebble Beach’s famed 17-Mile Drive, this escape will be used for the couple with their adult children.
Encompassing 6,700 square feet of living space, this three-level home was designed to interact with, and where possible become minimalist art. The levels are interconnected via a central staircase whose obscure glass tower under a large skylight diffuses natural light through the structure to its lowest level.

Above the ground floor are the social spaces, three steps down from the entry, a gallery acts as a spine alongside, the bedroom suites, each with a private terrace and concrete wall that slices through the interior plane to the exterior.
The materials of aluminum and stone (two varieties) define the interlocking forms of the building, with subtle differences in coloration creating an exterior palette that synchronizes with the environment.
The dwelling offers panoramic views of the California coast while expressing a connection to the geometries of the surrounding landscape. The home’s interiors were carefully selected to dovetail with the architects’ iconic and refined architecture.
The furnishings lend to the open, relaxing qualities of the site, with textures and a natural palette underscoring the integration of the outdoors, to form a seamless whole.
What We Love: The steel frame structure of this minimalist weekend retreat is nestled into the sloping property, with the lowest level submerged below ground. This helps to bring down the massing of this home and make it appear less prominent on the site. The architects integrated a perimeter skylight to bathe the lower level with natural light. Board-formed concrete on the exterior facade is in keeping with the minimalist aesthetic.
