Tour a gorgeous hacienda Spanish style retreat overlooking Biscayne Bay

This hacienda Spanish style vacation home was remodeled by KitchenLab Interiors, located in Coconut Grove, a lush bayside community of Miami, Florida. Hugging the shoreline of Biscayne Bay, Coconut Grove is known for its tropical vibe – banyan trees, palms, and live oaks mingle along quiet residential streets.

The owners, who reside in Chicago most of the year, desired a comfortable and casual vibe for their vacation retreat, one where they might be just the two of them hanging or hosting up to 20 guests for the holidays. Originally constructed 17 years ago, this 10,000 square foot home was completely reimagined, where every detail was thought of, from the furnishings to the bed linens and cookware. The home includes five guest bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and the owner’s suite.

Prior to the renovation, the new owners could not get past all the brown. With a large extended family — six kids between them, nothing could be too precious. They wanted to be able to sit on anything without worry. To address this, the designer used plenty of linen and indoor/outdoor fabrics to ensure durability. A third of this house is outdoors, under a covered loggia.

The designer refers to this project as just like designing a boutique hotel — each guest room was designed to feel inviting and comfortable while anticipating every need from toiletries to phone chargers. Every detail was designed with the guest in mind, even a place to store suitcases. An abundance of vintage rugs, lighting, and accessories was used throughout.

Vacation homes typically feel impersonal and contrived because they’re not lived in year-round, yet the designer wanted to break through the mold by infusing personality into the spaces.

KitchenLab Interiors brought together the team including an architect and builder that we had used on other projects in the Miami area. New railings, exterior lighting, and replacing exterior doors were also part of the scope. All the brown marble flooring on the main level was replaced with French limestone.

Partial renovations were given to all of the guest baths, including new tile, countertops, lighting, and accessories. Next came the kitchen, laundry, kitchenette, butler’s pantry, and kitchen dining area along with the main bathroom.

All existing plumbing fixtures were Waterworks, which were preserved, along with some tile. Tabarka tile was brought in to complement the existing tile. The designers wanted to bring in vintage hacienda Spanish style mixed with a small European influence — the opposite of Miami modern. One of the ways they were able to accomplish this was with hand-painted terra cotta flooring and Moroccan Zellige tile were used throughout the home.
