This stunning gambrel shingle style home was designed by Patrick Ahearn Architect, located in rural Edgartown, on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. The implied symmetry of the house celebrates the long views towards Eel Pond and the harbor. Access to the property is through a large courtyard, with its main entry and carriage house wing.
The west side of the court houses a free standing pool house cabana in the gambrel style as well as a hidden pool and garden. The interior finishes recall the grand shingle style homes of the turn of the last century but live in a more casual way as people wish to celebrate island life today.
The back of the property was sited to provide sweeping water views from expansive windows. This was ideal since the primary living spaces take advantage of the long views to the water. The owners requested that the back of the property appear like the structure’s front facade, however, to preserve a sense of public welcome.
Meeting this challenge meant incorporating elements into the water-facing elevation that would let it look as if it were the front façade. Particularly important was creating the symmetry one would expect from the street-facing side of a late-nineteenth-century shingle-style manor.
A cobblestone-edged pea-stone driveway curves around the house from the road, culminating in a motor court—partially defined by a cabana and pool—at the actual entrance.
What We Love: This gambrel shingle-style home offers elegant seaside living with a brand new design that seamlessly blends with the historical residences that surrounds it. The design of the courtyard and breezeway helped to effectively connect the main house with the carriage house and pool cabana. Overall, the finished result is an attractive home surrounded by natural beauty that will stand the test of time.
