Byrdesign has reimagined this 1920s Spanish-style bungalow for a young, worldly professional and surf enthusiast, located in Venice Beach, California. Much of this dwellings character had unfortunately been lost in a previous 1990s remodel, yet the owner saw the potential of restoring it back to its Spanish roots.
The project began with re-configuring the floor plan to improve the circulation of this small home, adding storage spaces in the form of a master walk-in closet and charming, of-the-era built-ins. Also included in the scope of this project was a complete redesign of the front porch entrance, curb gate and landscape.
Above: The steps leading up to entry were originally painted concrete, updated with a combination of Saltillo tiles and decorative hand-painted Spanish tiles.

Above: The original bungalow lacked an indoor-outdoor connection and had very little natural light. The designer was tasked with recapturing the Spanish charm of this dwelling while injecting it with tropical modernism. An indoor-outdoor kitchen was added to this home, drenching the interiors with natural light.
The house was stripped to its studs and re-imagined to appear as though the house was always that way. Historic details such as the Spanish arches, exposed wood ceiling beams, niched bookcases, arched fireplace, stucco walls and a variety of colorful talavera tile and Spanish-included cement tile patterns were reintroduced to the home.
What We Love: This Spanish style bungalow features charming elements throughout its design with playful pops of color. A strong indoor-outdoor connection has been created by replacing the windows and altering the floor plan to connect the kitchen to the yard. Living spaces are bright and airy thanks to a reconfigured floor plan, the integration of built-ins and open shelving in the kitchen. Overall, this home offers a coastal chic vibe and quintessential California living.

Above: The dining nook and built-in storage was created by borrowing square footage from a spacious master shower.
A galley kitchen and separate dark dining room was re-imagined to create a large, less compartmentalized space with a new wide folding glass wall connecting the indoor to the outdoor. The new layout made way for a bespoke light-filled dining nook, a spacious island, a charming built-in pantry and all new kitchen cabinetry.
The interior materials and furnishings are kept simple, organic and well made to reflect both a practical mid-century modern approach and a relaxed well traveled tropical vibe. With a healthy nod to the past while fully embracing its new coastal vibe, the home is truly a surfer’s paradise.
Above: The majority of the walls in this dwelling were kept white, with the exception of the office, which is located just off the kitchen. An accent wall is painted in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue.
