SkB Architects has designed the Sonoma Farmhaus project for a cycling enthusiast with a globally demanding professional career, located in Graton, a town in west Sonoma County, California. The owner desired a place that could be used as both a retreat of solitude and a gathering spot to share with friends and family.
This modern farmhouse encompasses 2,057 square feet of living space, nestled on a sprawling property of 25,680 square feet. The site was selected because of its proximity to a small town with a wonderful community and the cycling opportunities of the picturesque, coastal Sonoma County landscape.

The inspiration for this project takes its cues from the traditional forms of a farmhouse and its connection to community. Devised as an assemblage of two forms — the Main House and a Guest House with Bike Barn — connected by a central outdoor gathering space anchored by a fireplace.
The architects’ vision for this dwelling was to devise something consciously restrained and one with the ground on which it stands. Simplicity, clear detailing, and an innate understanding of how things go together were all central themes behind the design. Bookending each of the structures are solid walls of rammed earth blocks, constructed from soils excavated from the site.
According to the owner, the use of simple, yet rich materials and textures…“provides a humanness I’ve not known or felt in any living venue I’ve stayed, Farmhaus is an icon of sustenance for me”.
What We Love: This Sonoma Farmhaus project offers the owner a low-maintenance escape to entertain family and friends while taking advantage of the idyllic California weather for cycling year-round. Overall a beautiful design with a fantastic indoor-outdoor connection and spacious living spaces designed to cater to overnight guests.
