Seattle-based design studio Hoedemaker Pfeiffer is responsible for the design of this charming cottage home, located on Bainbridge Island, Washington. When a family lost their historic 100-year-old residence due to a tragic fire, they lost all of their beloved memories with it. The architects were tasked with restoring the timeless charm of the previous home, which was rebuilt on the former site.
This newly designed home would also become a more modern, elegant version of its former self while also designed to last another 100 years. The overall form is a series of smaller, interlinked house sections, creating the feel of a home that grew with additions over time. Each space was designed to maximize natural light and views.

In keeping with the original cottage, the new house offers many floor levels, some just a few steps above or below the adjacent level. The layout was maximized to accommodate a large growing family while making the house feel like a smaller cottage. To achieve this, the team devised low slung rooflines on the upper level while increasing the proportion and scale of windows and exterior materials alike.
Above: The exterior facade features a standing seam metal roof (less maintenance, and much lower risk of fire). The placement of the house melds with the existing contours of the site, perched up to the edge of a steep slope.
What We Love: This beautiful family cottage home on the Puget Sound offers an updated retreat for the owner and their extended family. We are loving the classic lines of this home and the fabulous deck for outdoor entertaining and mesmerizing waterfront views. Another incredible feature in this retreat is the indoor-outdoor sleeping porch with its fully removable windows. Overall, this home offers a cozy, yet spacious atmosphere for family gatherings, creating a dreamy waterfront getaway.
